English topics: situations and language areas

Curated guides to the English a situation asks for — the city, a trip, work, an interview — and to the language areas behind it: tenses, conditionals, phrasal verbs, reading.

Two kinds of question bring people to a page like this. One is an occasion: you are moving to a new city, you fly somewhere next month, you start a job that runs in English. The other is a part of the language that has never quite settled — the tenses, the conditionals, the phrasal verbs everyone says you need. The topics below are split accordingly: the situational bundles first, then the language ones. Both are reading sequences rather than folders, and in both the order is half of what is being curated. You cannot settle the present perfect until the past simple is solid, and you cannot ask the way before you can get the attention of a stranger.
