How the English level test works

The level check is adaptive: each question is picked from how you answered the last one, so it places you on the CEFR scale — A1 to C2 — in as few questions as it can. Most people finish in a few minutes. It is free, there is nothing to install, and you do not need an account.

English levels, A1 to C2

A1 and A2 are beginner and elementary, B1 and B2 intermediate and upper-intermediate, C1 and C2 advanced and proficient. Every lesson on the site is written for one of them:

Common questions

Is the English level test free?
Yes. It is free, runs in the browser and needs no sign-up.
How long does it take?
Between 12 and 20 questions, usually a few minutes. The test is adaptive: each question is chosen from your previous answers, so it stops as soon as your level is clear.
What does my result mean?
Your level on the CEFR scale: A1 and A2 are beginner and elementary, B1 and B2 intermediate and upper-intermediate, C1 and C2 advanced and proficient. The result also shows how you did in each skill.
What if I don't know an answer?
Choose "I don't know this one". A guess that happens to be right makes your result less accurate.
Is this an official certificate?
No. It is a placement test to start your learning at the right level, not an official exam such as IELTS or a Cambridge exam.
